GS1 location numbers also known GLN are used to identify any party or location which can be addressed, such as:
- Legal entities: Whole companies, subsidiaries or divisions such as a supplier, customer, bank, forwarder etc.;
- Physical entities: A particular room in a building, a warehouse or warehouse gate, delivery point;
- Functional entities: A specific department within a legal entity (e.g. accounting)
GLNs are allocated by GS1 India, as a seperate service
The use of GS1 location number provides companies with a method of identifying locations within and outside their company that are:
- Unique: With a simple structure, facilitating secure processing and transmission of data;
- Multi-sectoral: The non-significant characteristic of the GS1 numbers allows any location to be identified and consequently any business regardless of its activity;
- International: GS1 location numbers are unique worldwide. Moreover, the international network of GS1 Numbering Organizations, covering more than 80 countries, provides support in the local language.

First three digits are country code, next nine digits are location numbers allocated by GS1 India and the last digit is the check digit.
